Tips to Prepare Your Restaurant for Patio Season

May 7, 2018

It’s here, It’s here! As foodies across the city prepare for a long-awaited patio season, restaurant owners are putting in the work to create the best open-air dining experiences for 2018.

While the city transforms in temperature, here are a few tips to help optimize your patio space in no time:

TIP #1: FRESHENING UP:

After a long and vacant winter, your restaurant’s dining patio is sure to require a deep and thorough cleaning. From gum and debris to broken odds and ends – take the time to revive your patio space into a fresh and inviting atmosphere. (A little paint can go a long way!)

TIP #2: SEATING OPTIONS:

In addition to comfort and climate-durability – your patio space should be able to accommodate the comfort of your guests. Although it may be tempting to squeeze in as many of your loyal patrons as possible– elbow space and breathing room are essential to providing comfort to your guests as well as enough space for your staff to safely get around.

Instead, consider offering a variety of seating options – such as bar seating, moveable tables and/or lounge chairs.

TIP #3: MOOD LIGHTING:

As the sun goes down, the magic of mood lighting has the ability to completely transform your dining experience. With a variety of tea lights, candles, fairy lights, lanterns and tiki torches on the market – setting the mood with a muted glow will inspire your patio-loving patrons to keep coming back.

TIP #4: NOISE REDUCTION:

If your restaurant is located in an area with a lot of street traffic – noise pollution can sometimes become an issue. Be one step ahead of the noise by creating an auditory experience that best fits the vibe of your dining facility. Outdoor sound systems, freestanding water fountains and live local music are three very different, but very effective methods of claiming more than just taste buds!

TIP #5: PEST PREVENTION:

Although warm-weather dining has been along anticipated – the insects that come with it can often be a “buzz” kill.

Avoid any unwanted visitors by placing citronella candles, mosquito-repellent lanterns or even sodium vapor outdoor bulbs in strategic locations. Ensure that crumbs, dirty dishes and garbage are always efficiently disposed of, and consider decorating your space with ferns or vines as opposed to colourful flowers.

If all else fails, installing patio screens will definitely provide an extra-safe option.

TIP #6: CATER TO THE NIGHT OWLS:

Summer nights are meant for friends, memories and great food, of course. As people tend to dine later into the evening hours during the summer months, consider extending your restaurant’s business hours to accommodate.

Combining these extended hours with late-night menu options, featured drinks and live entertainment may also provide profitable incentives that fill your restaurant’s patio with loyal, happy customers all summer long!
