Tips for adding delivery to your restaurant

January 30, 2019

Take-out and delivery services have made a massive splash in the modern restaurant industry.

Responsible for over $70 billion dollars in sales each year, the modern consumer truly values the ease and convenience of on-demand service.

Where pizza and Chinese food seemed to be the only home delivery options for a number of years, this on-demand lifestyle trend has motivated the rest of the restaurant industry to catch up to the needs of their consumers!

With the convenience of ordering from home or work without having to travel, third-party delivery services are predicted to represent 40% of total delivery revenue by 2020 – representing a significant 15% increase from 2016.

Whether you hire on an external delivery service or implement a process in-house, these trends can do a great deal for increasing sales and encouraging repeat customer traffic.

To get you started, here are 4 helpful tips to adding a delivery service to your restaurant business:

DECIDE ON A METHOD OF DELIVERY:

Naturally, the first decision you will have to make will revolve around your method of delivery.

While integrating an ordering platform to an existing POS system is a great way to add this task in-house, you will need to designate a set of drivers to avoid impacting your restaurant’s efficiency and work flow.

Alternatively, many restaurant’s have opted for third-party delivery services such as UberEats, SkipTheDishes and/or Foodora. The major benefits to this option include:

• Increasing brand visibility
• Improving ease of ordering
• Appropriate number of drivers to support peak and slow ordering periods
• Encourage repeat customers
• Convenient payment method
• Minimizing busy phone signals or long wait times

DESIGNATE A DELIVERY PREP AREA:

It is not uncommon for restaurant operators to underestimate the volume of orders they will receive when they add the convenience of delivery services.

When hit by a rush, this may even impact the entire restaurant’s workflow by causing productivity to slow, delivery customers to wait and in-house guests to become increasingly frustrated.

To avoid interfering with your existing operation, consider designating a delivery prep area that is separate from the rest of your kitchen. This will make delivery prep and packaging much more efficient. Talk to your interior design team and general contractors for best solution to your delivery space needs.

HIRE/TRAIN A DELIVERY SPECIALIST:

Hiring and training your Delivery Specialists will be essential to your new delivery service.

They will be responsible for:
• Receiving delivery orders
• Expediting food
• Preparing to-go packaging
• Double checking orders
• Packaging marketing materials, napkins and utensils
• Labelling orders for pickup
• Corresponding with delivery drivers

How you prepare your staff for this added service will translate directly into the success of your consumer satisfaction. Attention to detail will be crucial for this one, as mistaken orders and missing items will be a bigger problem for delivery customers than they would be in-house.

DETERMINE THE MOST EFFECTIVE PACKAGING METHODS:

While your restaurant already has food safety and quality control standards in place, applying these standards to your delivery methods will require some careful thought and planning.

In order to maintain temperature and presentation, you will need to examine and re-examine your packaging choices to ensure the integrity of your customer’s orders.

Don’t be afraid to invest a little more money into proper packaging if it ensures that your food remains hot or cold without spilling or falling apart.

Stock up on sturdy, insulated and ventilated packaging along with all of the insulated bags, icepacks and packaging necessities you might need.

The more likely your orders can survive the car ride, the more likely your customers will keep coming back for more.
