Restaurant Trends 2018 – How will they help us live better?

January 24, 2018

The food and restaurant industries have shifted their focus to empower healthier, happier and more convenient lifestyles choices. With the freshness of a new year not far behind us, we have had the opportunity to observe the trending demands of today’s consumers – a demographic that is in large part dominated by Millennials.

Lead by their mindful consumer tendencies, Millennials have inspired restaurant owners to adapt to their socially-conscious characteristics by revolutionizing their traditional business models. By redefining corporate values within the food industry, we can expect more restaurants to prioritize health, happiness and convenience as the year goes on.

Let’s take a look at how these trends are helping us live our best lives:

HEALTH:

Over the past year, more and more restaurants have adjusted their menus to reflect the evolving need for more vegetarian options. Foodie trends such as Buddha bowls and avocado toast continue to decorate our social media binges with more exciting twists to vegetarian and vegan cuisine. As chefs embrace ingredients such as tofu, tempeh and quinoa, restaurants are now able to recreate familiar favourites in meat-free form.

In line with a health-conscious diet, more Millennials are replacing the booze with exotic tonics, non-alcoholic cocktails and earthy botanical mixtures. With that being said, tea drinkers have a lot to look forward to this coming year. As sales for herbal teas continue to rise for personal use, more tea bars are cashing in on this growing trend by making tea houses as sought after as coffee shops.

CONVENIENCE:

With online ordering and delivery services now a part of the societal norm, restaurants are redesigning their businesses to accommodate more takeout and delivery customers. From designated cashiers, curbside pickup and drive-thru additions, more restaurants are moving away from the full-service focus and investing more in their kitchen production.

One way that restaurants have been implementing this concept is by limiting their in-restaurant seating space to better focus on their off-premise client base. By taking advantage of current technology (such as food delivery services such as Uber, SkipTheDishes and Just Eat), the convenience of eating your favourite meals from the comfort of your own home will continue to gain popularity.

HAPPINESS:

The philosophy of mindfulness has played a large role in influencing modern values. As Millennial consumers prefer to understand everything possible about a particular brand, many companies have opened their doors to become more transparent and honest. Building trust between business and consumer has become a new expectation that lets people feel more like a part of the community.

Many restaurants have aligned their marketing to highlight these healthy and happy ideals. The more restaurants continue to share details about their food ingredients, beverage options, company values and community involvement, the more likely their audience will feel more connected.
